Abstract :

The proliferation of information and communication technology (ICT) has created vast opportunities for innovation and global connectivity; however, it has also facilitated the rise of cybercrime. In Nigeria, the growing involvement of youths in cyber-related offenses poses a significant threat to national development and moral integrity. This paper examines the nature, causes, and consequences of cybercrime among Nigerian youths, drawing on socio-economic, psychological, and moral perspectives. Using secondary data and scholarly literature, the study identifies unemployment, peer influence, weak moral foundations, technological exposure, and systemic corruption as the primary drivers of youth participation in cybercrime. The paper further evaluates government responses, including the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act of 2015 and the roles of enforcement agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Findings reveal that punitive approaches alone are insufficient without moral reorientation, educational reform, and digital empowerment. The study concludes that addressing cybercrime among Nigerian youths requires a holistic approach that integrates law enforcement, value-based education, and economic opportunities. Ultimately, the paper calls for a national digital ethics framework to transform Nigeria’s technologically skilled youths from cyber offenders into innovators and contributors to sustainable development.
